CANON 540/541/545/546/560/561/575/576 & XL REFILL INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REFILLING CANON BLACK 540 & 545 & XL CARTRIDGES

Please Note: Store bottles upright in a dark & cool place. Carefully remove the silver seal from the bottle top. Don’t pick up bottles by their tops.

Cartridges should be refilled soon after becoming empty so the print head does not get a chance to dry out. Once the print head has dried up the cartridge is not refillable.

Remove the label from the cartridge to locate the vent hole on the top of the cartridge. Pictures A show where the refill hole is for Black 540/540XL and some 545/545XL cartridges. If you are refilling a 545/545XL and the top cover looks like picture B, you should make a hole where the red arrow points.

                                                A           B

Use the supplied gold hook or small driver. (If you are into DIY you can also use a power drill with a 2mm bit if you prefer. However, you must not let the drill penetrate and damage the sponge at the bottom of the cartridge.)

You will need to load the syringe several times. The standard cartridge takes up to 4ml ink and the XL cartridge up to 8ml ink.

Please note the stated amounts are for a completely empty cartridge. SLOWLY and GENTLY inject the ink into the cartridge. Stop if the ink begins to well up from the hole. DON’T OVERFILL. Clean the top of the cartridge if there is any ink.

The next stage involves priming the cartridge and this is done with the refill clip.

FLAT PREMIUM REFILL CLIP

Please note the rubbers are either blue or green. The clip comes fitted with the larger rubber for Black Cartridges. Use the other smaller rubber for Colour Cartridges.

Grip the top of the cartridge and bottom of the clip tightly. Make sure the cartridge fits into the 2 side lugs at the back of the cartridge clip See picture D Now start the cartridge priming Fit the syringe (no needle) in the hole in the bottom of the clip. See picture E - Gently pull out the syringe plunger about 1cm. You may get a little ink in the syringe this is ok. This action primes and cleans the head nozzles.

Place cello tape over the top of the cartridge so it covers the hole. Use a pin and make a small hole through the tape. This action creates a vent hole. The cartridge will not function correctly without it. Put the cartridge back into the printer and run one or two cleaning cycles until the cartridge begins to print correctly. Do not exceed three cleaning cycles. If the printer does not work, you need to reset the cartridge. See below.

How to Reset Canon Ink Cartridges and Cancel Error Message See bottom of the Colour Refilling section for details on how to reset.

Please Note: With refilled or remanufactured cartridges, the printer will always display low or almost empty warnings. In the case of printers without display the colour and black lights will show yellow.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REFILLING CANON COLOUR 541 546 & XL

The recommended amounts of ink for refilling Black cartridges: 62/301/302/303/304 Standard Cartridges is 3ml & XL Cartridges 6ml - 305 Standard Cartridges is 2ml and 305XL Cartridges 3.5ml

Don’t overfill. Put the needle onto the syringe. Draw the recommended amount of ink into the syringe. It's best to load smaller 1-2ml amounts and fill the required number of times to make up the correct ml of ink.

Insert the filled syringe with the correct amount of ink into the cartridge refill hole. You will notice a slight resistance due to the sponge inside the chamber. Insert the needle no further than 3cm. Otherwise, you will stab into the filter screen and the ink will leak from the cartridge. Now carefully & slowly fill in the ink. If ink leaks from the filler opening, draw a little back into the syringe.

Remove the label from the cartridge. Locate the vent holes on the top of the cartridge. Use the gold screw to enlarge the holes. You can use a power drill or hand drill if you prefer. However, you must not let the drill penetrate the cartridge and damage the sponge at the bottom.

Position of the three colour filling holes

Use a toothpick to poke inside the hole and verify the colour sequence if you are not sure the first time.

Load the first syringe with 2ml of ink. For XL cartridges you should use 4ml ink per colour and inject the 4ml - 2ml at a time. SLOWLY and gently inject the ink into the cartridge. Stop if the ink begins to well up from the hole and draw back some ink.

Do not overfill. Clean the top of the cartridge if there is any ink. Repeat steps until all colours have been filled. The next stage involves priming the cartridge and this is done with a refill clip. Now start the cartridge priming Fit the syringe (no needle) in the hole in the bottom of the clip. Use the smaller Rubber in the Refill Tool. Gently pull out the syringe plunger about 1cm. You may see some ink in the syringe this ok. This action primes and cleans the head nozzles.

Place cello tape over the top of the cartridge so it covers every hole. Use a pin and make a small hole through the tape for each of the three holes on the cartridge. This action creates a vent hole. The cartridge will not function correctly without it. Put the cartridge back into the printer and run one or two cleaning cycles until the cartridge begins to print correctly. Do not exceed three cleaning cycles. If the printer does not work you need to reset the cartridge by following the steps on the next page.
